Stoke-on-Trent is the Brexit heartland that could be Corbyn’s Waterloo | John Harris

Friday, January 13th, 2017

If December’s Richmond Park byelection offered a fascinating insight into one side of the 48:52 divide, this one should give us the opposite viewpoint

If you want to get an idea of England’s prevailing mood, go to the Midlands. That wasn’t a bad principle to apply to the general election, when the Warwickshire town of Nuneaton became a byword for the Tories’ defeat of Ed Miliband’s Labour party. Now, with the news that the Labour MP Tristram Hunt is resigning a seat that was destined to disappear under boundary changes, triggering a byelection, the same idea looks very relevant again.

If Jeremy Corbyn is looking for big radical ideas, here’s one that could work | John Harris

Instead of shooting from the hip on pay, the Labour party leader should champion reform of the benefits system

Set aside the mysteries of his position on Brexit, and imagine for a moment that Jeremy Corbyn’s sudden intervention on high pay and inequality this week had been a bit more effective. Instead of his proposals flipping around like a dropped hosepipe, he might have picked one policy, got his aides to do their homework, and then evangelised about it for the foreseeable future.

I’d settle for the idea he seemed to alight on after ditching a crude wage cap: that government procurement might somehow be limited to firms who stick to a pay ratio of 20:1 and award their executives no more than £350,000 a year – which would be somewhat difficult to pull off without tearing up thousands of public contracts, but has an undeniable oomph.

Relaunches and resolutions from Corbyn to May – Politics Weekly podcast

Wednesday, January 11th, 2017

Heather Stewart is joined by John Harris, Anne Perkins and Max Wind-Cowie to discuss the new year speeches from Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn. Plus Conservative MP Maria Miller on the representation of women in parliament and Henry McDonald on the crisis in the Northern Ireland assembly

Westminster returns to business this week with political relaunches and New Year’s resolutions. As Theresa May pilots the ‘shared society’, Jeremy Corbyn plans to tap into the new mood of political populism. But are there well thought out ideas behind the soundbites?

Joining Heather Stewart in our first episode of the year are Guardian columnist and presenter of Anywhere But Westminster John Harris, leader writer and political commentator Anne Perkins; and the deputy director of ResPublica, Max Wind-Cowie.

The Brexit resistance: ‘It’s getting bigger all the time’

Wednesday, January 11th, 2017

Many pro-Europeans around Britain believe there is still a chance to fight the result of the EU referendum. So what do they think they can achieve?

“I’m still hoping. I can’t really believe it’s going to happen, but in the back of my mind it’s always there. I love this country; I want to live here. I always dreamed of coming, because it was such an open-minded, lovely place where foreigners were greeted. I think that’s part of why I was so shellshocked on 24 June: because this country I thought I knew suddenly turned up a very ugly face.”

Chris Hoffman is a 44-year-old freelance translator who lives in south Birmingham. She is originally from Stuttgart and first came to the UK thanks to the European Union’s Erasmus student exchange programme. Later on, her husband started academic research in Birmingham, which then turned into a full-time job – and a little more than a decade ago, they settled in the city. They have an eight-year-old son. “He might not have a British passport,” she tells me, “but he was born here, and he feels British.”

The UK’s left-liberal fightback must start with communities

Friday, January 6th, 2017

A drastic rethink is needed to win back the voters whose lives and towns have been ripped apart by globalisation

Anyone who wants to understand the social fissures still visible in Britain six months after the Brexit vote could do worse than travel to Lincolnshire.

Here, yes, you will hear about immigration, low wages and job security. But you will also be aware of something deeper, a shared longing for a sense of community and neighbourliness that locals say has dwindled to almost nothing.
