For his final pre-election report, John Harris hits the knife-edge Tory/Labour marginal of Nuneaton – one of the small number of Middle English seats that will decide which party forms the next government. There’s a huge billboard of Alex Salmond in the town centre, and as well as the usual talk about immigration and welfare, the streets are alive with nervous chatter about the SNP supposedly coming for England’s money. Even if the Tories win the battle, they’ve already lost the war for England’s soul | John Harris

A Cameron victory won’t hide the deep trouble the Conservatives are in. But a party synonymous with people soaked in wealth can rediscover the common touch

The last-minute return of Tory-Ukip switchers might do it. Thanks to stoked-up English fears about the SNP and the prospect of Ed Miliband becoming prime minister, maybe some general sense of staying put will belatedly break out across the country, and seal the deal even more conclusively.

But as delusional noise about the inevitability of Conservative defeat begins to fade, it seems sensible to acknowledge that another Tory-led government remains entirely possible, and the newly “pumped-up” David Cameron might yet be saved. Thursday night’s three-way leaders’ Question Time said as much; so did the poll this week that put the Tories five points ahead.
